BIO

//Origin

Juliane Johannsen was born on Oktober 17, 1990, in Hamburg, Germany.

From her early days on, Juliane decided to become a singer.

// Early Life

When she was only 14 years old, she met the former Metropolitan Opera singer Jonathan Guss. He became her mentor and Singing Teacher over a period of 5 years.

Mr Guss classically trained Juliane´s voice and gave her the proper foundation for her vocal education. Furthermore, she got introduced to the American culture and became familiar to the English language from an early age on.

//Early Career

When she turned 19 years old, she auditioned for different Conservatories all around Europe, while graduating from High school. During that time her plan was to become an opera singer, but she also got introduced to the Jazz world. After she visited some Jazz Jams in her hometown, she realised that her true gift is vocal improvising (Scat Singing).

In 2010 she started to gig around town, while she was studying historical musicology and Italian at the Hamburg University.

Over the years, her love to Jazz and Songwriting grew and she decided to audition for Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, in September 2011. She got accepted in May 2012, and flew across the ocean to fulfil her dreams to become a singer.

//Berklee College of Music Time and Band life

At Berklee College of Music, she met the guitarist and songwriter Matan Perets.

With him, Juliane founded the band “The Color 7”, in her first year of College. It was a collaboration of 6 people from all around the world. They had the opportunity to record with famous audio engineers Matthew Ellard and Shawn Slate who produced bands such as Queen, Weezer and Radiohead. Juliane got a lot of studio experience during that time. But, she also joined several on stage competitions, such as the Perfect Pitch Competition in which she reached the final. She also studied Stage Performance under James Taylor´s brother, Livingston Taylor and she continued her vocal training with the famous background singer Kudisan Kai and with the Scat Queen, Lalah Hathaway. Furthermore, she got more and more familiar with the concept of Songwriting. Matan and Juliane worked constantly on their first album for “The Color 7. In summer 2013 the whole band and the Italian Engineer Giuseppe Tancchini decided to travel all the way to Italy, to record the first, official album, “Burbanks on fire”.

//Austin TX Time and Collaborations

After “The Color 7”, spend 2 months in the studio they went on a European Tour. The band returned successfully to Berlin, but went separated ways from there on. Only Juliane and Matan tried to find new band members in Berlin. Unfortunately the Rock Scene wasn’t big at all, and the two songwriters returned to the States in 2014. Of all cities they tried to succeed in the life music capital of the world, Austin, TX. Here the songwriters went separate ways and Juliane finished her Associate Degree in Music, while playing around town. She mostly played in Jazz bars or at the famous festival S&SW (South by South West). She founded the International Jazz Trio and she played flute and sang for the ACC Jazz Ensemble. Furthermore her dream became true, when she performed with the local trumpet player Ephraim Owens and the famous piano player Red Young. She played for several wedding bands all around Houston, Dallas and Austin. Furthermore she studied voice under the Opera singer Suzanne Fernandez and she started to become a vocal coach/teacher for newcomer bands, such as the Nikis. In May 2017, after living in the States for four years, Juliane decided to return to Germany.

Now she lives in Berlin and collaborates with her younger brother Henrik Johannsen who is also a talented musician and different music projects all around town.
